Contrary to the “trucks or breakups” ideal people have about country music, this cliche is untrue. An example song that defies such societal stigmatizations is “crush” by Faith Schueler.
Released in early January 2025, the song borrows aspects of modern-day pop and blends them seamlessly with the features of country music. Most notably, a soulful rhythmic drum synth plays, setting a dreamy, contemporary tone. This is then followed by the lyric “Could this be more than a crush?” being layered with vocal effects such as reverb and delay, hallmarks of modern pop production. It builds anticipation for the song, setting the stage for listeners to fully immerse themselves in the adventure. As the first verse begins, the pop elements pull back slightly, allowing the storytelling heart of country music to shine through. The lyrics narrate a story of being instantly attracted to someone, undoubtedly being faithful to its country origins through its lyrical structure and vocal tone.
Then, the instruments kick in. The tempo picks up. The drums get louder, and the guitars and synths fill out the space more, filling the chorus with vibrancy and exhilaration. As the chorus progresses, the beat drops stronger and Schueler’s vocals shine with even more intensity. Thus, increasing its beat to something catchy, turning it into an undeniably bop! Moreover, the melody played by the guitar has a hopeful sound, giving the listeners many sensual emotions, like the exhilaration and nervous hope of liking someone back and getting the returning affection. These feelings are not foreign to many listeners, hence effectively connecting to their common experiences of simple, innocent love for another.
Putting both the verse and chorus together, Schueler successfully entwines a starstruck love story with real romance, waiting for their stars to align. A beat to listen to and yearn for, everything builds up to the breaking point, where the chorus flows with raw hope, hitting the listener with a swirl of impact and intensity. Streams of the song where love is the answer, "Crush" is definitely "[keeping] up with our heartbeats" as Schueler would belt out with easy grace.
The tempo drops gradually, continuing the story and describing the feeling of deepening your connection with the person you like before slowly picking up speed and accelerating to a blasting second verse. The lyrics “But herе we are again, seeing if our stars align” beautifully encapsulates the feeling of trying to see if the other person feels the same way, as shown by “seeing if our stars align. Moreover, the vivid imagery present in these two lines paints the enchanting and mystical image of Schueler and her lover being connected by fate and a sturdy red string of love. Hence, the celestial portrayal of love is sure to capture the listener’s hearts and souls, appealing greatly to many’s desire for happy endings.
Then, the chorus kicks in yet with another stirring and fast-paced momentum, leaving listeners ramped up with the Taylor Swift vibe, thus increasing the tempo and emotional intensity. The bridge is a line from the first verse, “You look kinda dangerous and I should probably run”, highlighting reflection on their first meeting, but this time, shedding light on how Schueler is almost grateful that she did not listen to her initial perceptions of the other. This offers a thoughtful insight into the complexity of love, and further emphasises how one’s first impressions do not define them. The chorus plays again, making it catchy for all listeners and providing a sense of familiarity as it has already been repeated.
Finally, the outro plays, with Schueler singing the lines “Could this be more than a, a crush?/ A crush” twice before fading out. The vocal effects here are similar to the ones used in the beginning, making it a full circle. Slowly, the song fades out, and the vocals get quieter, ending on a wistful note. In an almost cruel way, Schueler ends this song in an open, ambiguous manner that does not reveal whether she succeeds in capturing his heart, hence leaving the listeners to ponder. Furthermore, Schueler’s interesting method of ending with a cliffhanger highlights how love, be it in a crush or relationship, never ends.
All in all, “crush” by Faith Schueler is a testament to how country music isn’t its stereotype with its upbeat melody and ability to incorporate aspects of modern-day pop into it while still being faithful to the country sound.
